Developments in Luton

The M1 Junction 10a scheme is nearing completion and will officially open next month. By upgrading the junction Luton Borough Council has reduced congestion and delays at both the junction itself and on the M1; making the road safer; journey times more reliable; improving access to existing and potential development areas; and improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Along side this the new purpose-built travel centre will open early summer giving residents and visitors a fantastic new facility at the new bus-rail interchange. The new centre will provide a bus/coach/rail ticket desk, a Starbucks café, toilets, and a personal travel planning area. The £500,000 centre has been funded by a grant obtained from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The new Luton Travel Centre also perfectly complements additional works undertaken by the Council under the Town Centre Transport Scheme to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists between the station area and the town centre, including completing the inner ring road, closing Guildford Street to through-traffic and pedestrianising Bute Street with high quality granite paving.

Luton Poppy Appeal

Pupils at Barnfield West Academy, Luton Town Football Club players and representatives from Love Luton came together to sow poppy seeds as part of the second year of the Luton Poppy Appeal on Friday, 8th May 2015. The date was chosen to mark the 70th Anniversary of VE day and remember the many who lost their lives at war.

The Luton Poppy Appeal, spearheaded by Love Luton and privately funded by local businesses, was first launched back in 2014 to encourage local people to plant poppy seeds in remembrance of all those who fought and died in World War I and other battles, and remembering those actively serving our country today to keep us safe.

Groups wishing to obtain free poppy seeds can do so by downloading and completing the form at www.loveluton.org.uk/poppy. Love Luton will be hosting a stall in the Mall on the 13th June 2015.  Residents can come along and find out more information, donate to the Poppy Appeal and pick up seeds on the day.

Love Luton
Half Marathon

Love Luton will be hosting its third half marathon on Sunday 25th October 2015. Beginning at Stockwood Park Athletics Centre, the course will take runners through the Luton Hoo Estate and back out onto the roads of Luton.  This year’s course has been refreshed and will take in the stunning grounds of Luton Hoo estate with runners passing the iconic mansion house and breath-taking landscape.

The course itself is on road, some parts are hilly making the course challenging at times but they are evenly spread throughout.  All this coupled with beautiful scenery and traffic free makes for a wonderful experience.

The half marathon begins at 9am and runners will have a maximum of three hours to finish. A fully qualified and experienced convoy follow the race and will lift the road closures as soon as it is safe to do so, allowing traffic to flow as normal. All road closures will be lifted by no later than 12:30pm.

For a limited time only you can save up to 15 per cent by entering the discount code ‘LoveLuton15’.

London Marathon Success

Many of our local runners took part in the recent London Marathon.   Some of the runners shared their stories and images with Love Luton.

Linda Scanlan of Stopsley Striders said  “I'd been having problems with my knee since mid March but had been given the green light to run from the physio the Tuesday before the marathon. Because of the injury I didn't know what I was capable of or how much my knee would play up so I just decided to go for it and keep going as long as I could. Energy gels and support round the way from family and friends who had come to watch gave me a real boost. Never underestimate the power of crowd support in a race! Things got harder from about Mile 21 and I really found myself having to dig in but eventually the signs with 800m to go... 600m to go... 365 yards to go came up and I knew the end was near. I crossed the finish line in 3 hours 31 minutes and 56 seconds. Amazingly a Personal Best! It was a great experience and I think I'll be back for it next year”

Samantha Polman (in image) ran for the charity Action Medican Research and raised more than £2000.   Natwest, Samantha’s employer matchfunded the money she raised.

Dave Coard of Boxfit and also one of the Luton half marathon organisers ran the London Marathon in 3 hours and 19 minutes.

A big well done to everyone who took part!

Love Luton partner’s news

Arriva recently launched their new network with 13 brand new buses and an investment of over £1.5 million. A big thank you to everyone who took part in naming the 10 new buses after local legends. Keep a look out and see how many you can spot!

London Luton Airport published its 2014 Community Engagement report which highlights the Airport’s success working with the community to create tangible benefits for local people and local businesses. In 2014 its flagship youth employment programme ‘Get into Airports’, run in partnership with The Prince’s Trust, saw 28 young people complete the scheme of which 78% have gained work as a direct result.

The impact of the ‘Get into Airports’ programme has been far reaching, inspiring  other employers to run their own schemes with The Prince’s Trust.  Having offered a placement for a young person on the second Airport programme Thameslink Railways adopted the ‘Get into’ model and created ‘Get into Railways’. Thameslink has now run five programmes with 80% of participants gaining employment.

As the programme grows from strength to strength, the Airport is looking for aviation enthusiasts seeking employment and training aged 18-25 to join future programmes.

Please register your interest with anna.crump@princes-trust.org.uk
