Luton - a city in all but name.

In 2012 Luton bid to become a City, unfortunately it did not win the bid.

Luton has been transformed. City status was bid to create a milestone to mark Luton’s achievement. The population of Luton has doubled over the past 60 years. It is now one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the UK with over a third of its population from non-white backgrounds, including British Pakistanis, British Bangladeshis and British West Indians. In the last decade a new wave of Eastern Europeans have chosen to live in Luton due to its abundant employment opportunities.

Luton’s diversity is its strength, enriching the lives of all its inhabitants. Lutonians speak over 140 languages between them, and celebrate their cultural heritage together each year through events such as the largest one-day carnival in Europe and the Luton Mela. Contrary to the negative media attention, communities in Luton are incredibly strong and cohesive. As the Deputy Prime Minister recently said, “Luton in so many ways represents an open, confident and tolerant Britain.”

This bid is for the people, by the people. Luton’s businesses, leaders and communities formed the Love Luton campaign to ensure that the city status bid fully reflected the views and aspirations of all Lutonians.

It was a Diamond Celebration for Luton

It was a right royal event for Luton when on Sunday June 3rd the town hosted the Love Luton Diamond Jubilee Celebration in St George’s Square. It was a full day of events to celebrate the 60th year of the reign of HM The Queen and the rich mix of diversity and culture in Luton:

The Luton Cultural Food Festival  - local restaurants and food gave a flavour of the excellent and diverse food that is on offer in the town. There was fun for the children with a free bungee ride, children’s section and colouring competition and children’s entertainment.

The day was also part of the national 'Big Lunch' event that is being held across the country.  Chairs and tables were provided in the square so people could come along, enjoy the food on offer or some even brought a picnic. The weather was bad, but people kept smiling!
